Truth Telling From The Trenches With Intentional Balancing's Biofeedback Technician Jennifer Ross

Jennifer Ross has been helping people during times of stress or the past 16 years as a Registered Nurse. Most of those years were spent in Ambulatory Surgery, where patients often dealt with anxiety, fear and pain. This is a difficult time for many as it requires letting go of control and being vulnerable.  Jennifer realized that stress was at the root of so many issues in our health today, and decided to leave nursing to explore Biofeedback.  As a Biofeedback Technician, she focuses on stress reduction and addressing the subconscious for a deeper understanding of where you hold stress.  We live in a fast paced world with so much demanding our attention, and when we aren't equipped to deal with our environment, thoughts or events, we internalize it as stressful.  In order to move past this we need to learn how to reduce our stress and react differently.  Real change comes from giving people the education, tools and guidance they need so they feel empowered to take action.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

I have dealt with stress and anxiety for most of my life. Taking care of people when they are sick, injured or dealing with a difficult diagnosis takes it's toll on the caregiver. I realized I needed a shift in my life and biofeedback made sense personally and I knew it could help so many others in the same situation. I am a BIG believer of intentions. Our thoughts and beliefs, both conscious and subconscious, shape our view of the world and the events that play out in our lives. 

 

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

I am trying to practice what I preach because I am a do'er by nature, but craving to just be.  I do a pretty good job most days because I know how much better my day goes when I connect with myself.  I love going on walks to clear my head, connecting to the world outside and getting a little exercise all at the same time.  I am a multi-tasker so I love being able to check off several boxes at once. LOL.  My favorite self-care activities are reading, meditation, walking outside and sauna sessions.

 

What does your work day look like and how do you maximize your productivity?

After I get my kids off to school, I settle into my day.  Depending upon what I am doing that day I try to incorporate a focus on self-care.  I am naturally a do-er so I try to bring more aspects of be-ing into my day.  I see clients for private sessions, research and develop content for my stress reduction classes and foster my relationships with those around me.  I find that when I have a balance of these activities, my energy level maintains and I am more productive.

 

How do you bring your great business ideas to the world to serve your clients?

I love to connect with people.  To get past the superficial and exterior layer and get to know what lights them up inside.  For some of us, our lights have been dimmed for so long that we can't find our way out of a situation and this becomes added stress in our already busy lives. Since our "subconscious shapes 95% or more of our life experiences" it's not surprising that we have a hard time consciously trying to figure it out.  To connect with people, and share what I know, I offer classes and workshops on stress reduction.  People rarely open up until you have earned their trust.

 

What is one trend in business that excites you?

I am excited about the reach potential that my business provides.  In nursing, I was only able to help the patients on our schedule that day.  I previously taught classes in healthcare and really loved that model of connecting.  Coming from a very black & white world in medicine to having my own business has sure been an eye opener.  I have more hats today than ever before in my life. LOL. I love the challenge though.

 

What is one strategy that helped you grow your business?

Connecting with great networking groups of other women business owners.  It is a great support network as well as inspiration to see so many other women out there conquering the business world.

 

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

Making decisions around spending money in the beginning.  I don't look at it as a failure, more of a learning lesson for future spending.  I tend to be too hard on myself as it is and hold fear around making mistakes...don't we all!  So I make a conscious effort to focus on the lesson learned rather than letting it hold me down.

 

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to this community?

Well since the business side is not my strong suit, I will stick to an idea on health and wellness that ties into business.  Nurture your relationships through connection.  Relationships can be a huge source of stress when they are neglected or communication is lacking.  Social media sometimes gets more of our attention than those that mean the most to us.  It doesn't take much time to send a handwritten note, make a call or connect with those that we love but it does take a conscious effort.  Connection to others is part of good self-care.

 

What is the best $100 you have recently spent? on What? Why?

Well it was quite a bit more than $100 but I invested in a sauna for my home.  I love the heat, the benefits it provides and the fact that I can read or watch a podcast/video at the same time.  See there goes that multi-tasker again. LOL

 

What is one piece of software or app that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

I use GQueues to keep my list of "to-do's" and projects in one place, plus I can send a quick email to my inbox when I am not at home so I won't forget my ideas or action items. I am at a point where I will need to look at automation next.  It's a good place to be!

 

What is the best business book you have read? Why?

Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller.  It has helped me to see how to share my message and how to make the client the hero of their story.  It is not about me and my degree, skills or accomplishments, it is about the client and their journey.  I am the guide to help them reduce stress so they can focus on what matters most.

Who inspires you in business and why?

So many people, from famous people to women in my circle of influence that have built their businesses from the ground up. These women inspire me to want to do more, be more and learn more each day. However, I would have to say that the essence of who I am is my inspiration right now. I know that I am capable of amazing things. It's the journey to find my way back, learning to really take care of myself and listen to the whisper within that drives me because I have neglected her for a very long time and she has been patiently waiting...knowing and trusting that I would find my way back.

 

What are your thoughts on work-life balance?

I focus on balancing my week.  Some days I am seeing clients, other days are more social/networking and then there are days when I can focus on self-care.  I always make sure to connect with my family around the table at dinner time.  No phones, no TV, just connecting.  Work-life balance is subjective.  If it works for you, great, if it doesn't then change it.  That is the beauty of it all.

 

What are the 3 business lessons you’ve learned so far?

 

1. It is not your job to like me - it's mine.

2. Your energy introduced you before you even speak.

3. You have survived 100% of your roughest days. Keep going!

 

What is your workspace like?

Right now my work-space is split between my P/T office space in Edmond and my home.  I am hoping to have the need for F/T office space very soon so I can surround myself with my decor.  It will be light and bright and full of amazing energy...I can see it now.

 

Last thing you do at the end of your work day?

I look over what was accomplished and make plans for the next day.  I try to limit my day to a reasonable amount to get done.  I am very productive in a short amount of time so I tend to push to get more done.  I am learning that pushing doesn't equate to getting more done but it does use up more energy in the long run.

 

What is the one thing you can't leave home without?

My computer and device for Biofeedback and my Square reader...because a girls gotta get paid right!!

 

What superpower would you love to have to use for good?

I would love to have the gift of insight.  So people could see themselves as the wonderful, amazing, imperfect (yet perfect) human being that they are.  Of course, being able to fly would be fun too and I could avoid all the traffic...hmm hard choice. LOL

Wow...well, I'm not sure.  These questions were awesome and required some thought.  If I had a wish, it would be that stress would be addressed every time you saw the doctor and that stress reduction would be an incentive for more people.  There are many ways to improve our quality of life and I strongly believe stress reduction is among the top.
